History of Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church

Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church

royal redeemer lutheran church west chester ohioIn the mid-1980's faithful pastors and leaders from three of our area sister congregations, King of Kings Lutheran, Mason, Immanuel Lutheran, Hamilton, and Messiah Lutheran, Greenhills, combined energy toward a new mission congregation in West Chester Ohio.

The Reverend Ronald Mueller accepted the call as mission developer in September, 1987, and in December, 1987, the first worship celebration was offered at Liberty Jr. School. On December 4, 1988, Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church was chartered as a congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (Ohio District). The original church building was dedicated on March 1, 1992. Under the leadership of Pastor Mueller, the congregation grew in the 1990's along with the surrounding community.   Royal Redeemer was marked by faithful Word and sacrament ministry, strong fellowship, and hard-working lay leadership.

The congregation suffered a series of splits in the mid-90's, which, though painful, enabled the people to clarify the beliefs and focus of ministry.  In 1998, Pastor Mueller resigned and Pastor Lyle Rasch began serving as Interim Pastor.

  • In 1999, Pastor Joel Morgan accepted the call as Royal Redeemer's second pastor.
  • In 2000, Royal Redeemer Christian Preschool was opened with a full enrollment of 52 students.
  • In 2001, the congregation began offering a contemporary praise worship service in addition to a traditional worship service.
  • In 2004, the preschool expanded its ministry to 92 students.
  • In 2005, thanks to a longstanding partnership with the Lakota Sports Organization, parking was expanded to accommodate congregational growth.  Sunday School was expanded to two hours, concurrent with Sunday worship services.
  • In 2006, a master plan was completed for Royal Redeemer's seven acres of land, including a multipurpose family life center, a traditional sanctuary, and a two-story education wing.
  • In 2007, the congregation gave Pastor Joel the gift of a summer sabbatical.  That fall, the congregation changed its governance to a policy-based structure to maximize volunteer resources.
  • in 2008 the congregation added a third worship service and began a partnership with the Lakota Sports Organization on the annual Fam Jam, serving hundreds of our neighboring families each spring.
  • In 2010 the congregation began offering a summer baseball camp to preschool families from our community.
  • In 2011 Pastor Anders Davidson accepted the call as Associate Pastor.
  • In 2013 the congregation completed a facility expansion, doubling the available space for ministry.
  • In 2014 Vicar Ben Burge was hired as Ministry Assistant.
  • In 2016 Pastor John Benham accepted the call as Executive Pastor.
  • Every year since 2001, Royal Redeemer has sent a mission team to places such as Juarez, Mexico, Beattyville, KY and Ashland, KY.

Today, Royal Redeemer Church draws over 300 people together weekly for worship and study.  God is calling us to bring the Good News of life in Jesus Christ to a world that is hungry for good news.
